Scholar Support Services
One major responsibility of the Scholarships and Advanced Training Division is to liaise with the Service Commissions Department, Government Human Resource Services Co. Ltd., and other private institutions to ensure the placement of returned Government scholars, thereby ensuring that scholarship recipients honour their contractual obligations to the Government.
The period of obligatory service ranges from one [1] year to five [5] years based on the total cost of the scholarship.
Scholars will be placed in both the public and private sectors depending on the availability of jobs, area of study and overall competencies. The Standard Human Resource practice with respect to recruitment will apply. Public officers are required to resume duty in their Ministries/Departments. Non-public officers are required to submit applications for employment to the Service Commissions Department and Government Human Resource Services Co. Ltd.
If employment is not offered within six [6] months of submitting a complete application, the recipient must seek employment in Trinidad and Tobago and remain employed in Trinidad and Tobago for the entire period of the obligatory service.
Failure to serve the country constitutes a breach of contract.
Such an action will require the repayment of all or the proportionate amount of money expended on the scholarship together with interest at the rate of seven and three quarter percent [7 3/4%] per annum.
Repayments are to be made in a lump sum of fifty percent [50%] in the first instance and a monthly rate to be determined by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration.
Persons who are required to repay Government will be required to enter into another agreement with Government.
