1. To qualify for scholarships offered by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago applicants must

be a citizen of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
-
be under 45 years of age
-
satisfy the academic requirements stipulated for the particular scholarships
-
have prior admission to the degree programme for which a scholarship is being sought in some cases.

2. Generally, the age limit for all scholarships is 45 years but in some cases the age limit may be adjusted according to the programme of study. As a matter of policy, Public Officers with less than 3 years service to complete before proceeding on compulsory retirement will not be considered for scholarships. Scholarships offered by different countries also have varying age requirements.

3. The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through the Ministry of Public Administration (Scholarships and Advanced Training Division), offers both undergraduate and post graduate scholarships in various fields of study. A full list is given on this website.

4. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago offers scholarships to nationals of Commonwealth Member States under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan.

5. Each scholarship is peculiar depending on the place of study and the circumstances that warrants the award of the scholarship. However, scholarships usually cover the cost of:
- Tuition
- Books
- Compulsory fees
- Travel Expenses (if studying abroad)
- Personal maintenance allowance (P.M.A.) for non-public officers
- Salary loan (if applicant holds a substantive appointment in the Public Service)

6. A handbook detailing the rules governing scholarships is available to all scholarship recipients.

7. The responsibility of re-registering for classes each year lies with the candidate. The only exception to this rule applies in the case of illness. Students must present a valid medical certificate to the SATD requesting a leave of absence.In cases where candidates reneged on the terms and conditions of their scholarships, it will constitute a breach of contract. In accordance with established policy, the candidate will be required to repay all monies spent by the Government plus interests.

8. When candidates switch courses or programmes of study, they can have their awards cancelled and they will be asked to re-pay the costs of the awards with interest.

9. Candidates can have their awards suspended for a period of time only in cases of illness in which a valid medical report is presented.

10. It is recommended that all candidates maintain a 3.5 to 4.0 G.P.A.

11. Yes. However the scholarship will not cover the entire programme of study. For instance if an applicant completes one year of a three year Degree programme, the scholarship will cover the remaining two years.

12. Failure or breach of contract will result in the immediate refund to the government, the total amount of the loan made to him/her together with interest which shall be charged at a rate of 7 ¾ percent per annum from the time of the first installment of the loan was paid to or on behalf of the student and thereafter on outstanding monthly balances. It is desirable for all monies to be repaid en bloc. However, candidates are allowed to negotiate with the SATD to arrive at a suitable proposal that will best assist the candidates with the re-payment.

13. The Ministry of Public Administration has no provision for the grant of financial aid to persons who do not qualify for a scholarship.

14. Courses can be done by students during the semester break. However, the scholarships will not fund these summer courses. Exception is made only if a compulsory course is offered in the summer and not during the semester.

15. Scholarships are for full-time study/research work only.

16. Yes. The period will be determined in accordance with established policy.

17. No. When awarded a scholarship, the successful recipient is contracted to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
